About AcquiLingua

The problem with language apps

Hundreds of millions of people have used language apps. Most of them still can't hold a real conversation in the language they were trying to learn. That's not a coincidence, and it's not because those people didn't try hard enough.

The apps that dominate the market were built to keep you engaged. Gamification works. Streaks work. Points and badges and daily reminders work at producing daily active users. What they're less good at is producing fluent speakers, and that gap is the whole reason AcquiLingua exists.

Real language acquisition happens through conversation, not through recognition quizzes. AcquiLingua was built around that premise.

Where the methodology comes from

AcquiLingua is grounded in Comprehensible Input theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Krashen, Emeritus Professor of Education at USC. After decades of research into how people actually acquire languages, Krashen's conclusion was that fluency comes from subconscious exposure to real communication in the target language, not from conscious memorization or grammar study.

This is the same process that produced your native language. You didn't study it. You heard it, understood it in context, and gradually began producing it. The same mechanism works for adults learning a second language. It just needs the right conditions.

For a long time, creating those conditions at scale wasn't possible. You needed a real person, available whenever you were, willing to converse with you at exactly your current level. That constraint is gone now.

Our academic partners include linguists at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and researchers who have worked directly alongside Dr. Krashen on language acquisition. The methodology underpinning AcquiLingua isn't something we adapted from a popular summary. It comes from the people who developed and tested it.

Built in Hawai'i

Hawai'i has always been a place where languages meet. Japanese, Tagalog, Ilocano, Hawaiian, Mandarin, Pidgin, and English. Multilingualism is part of the fabric of the place, and it shapes how people here think about communication and culture.

AcquiLingua is a family business rooted in Hawai'i. The team brings together decades of experience in software engineering and artificial intelligence alongside direct personal history with language learning. We launched our beta at Hawai'i Tech Week and have built the company through local partnerships including Kapi'olani Community College, the University of Hawai'i's LEAP Start entrepreneurship program, and STEM Works.

What we're trying to do

The language learning market is large and mostly sells the same thing: structured lessons, vocabulary lists, gamified practice. Some of it is useful. None of it is sufficient on its own, because none of it is conversation.

We built AcquiLingua to give anyone access to genuine conversation practice in 110 languages, personalized to their interests and level, available whenever they need it.

We built AcquiLingua with privacy as a design commitment. We do not keep a permanent conversation history, but we temporarily retain limited chat-response data and technical metadata for reliability and duplicate-request protection. Completed chat-turn records are marked to expire after about 24 hours, subject to the deletion and backup timing described in our Privacy Policy. Your data isn't sold.
