Help and Getting Started

New to AcquiLingua or have a question about how something works? This page walks through the basics.

Creating Your Account

Go to acquilingua.com and sign up with your email address. Account creation takes about a minute. You will receive a confirmation email to verify your address. Click the link in that email to activate your account.

AcquiLingua uses Amazon Web Services Cognito for authentication. Your password is stored in encrypted form and is never visible to us.

Setting Up Your Profile

After you verify your email, you will be prompted to complete a short profile. This is where you tell us about your interests, your occupation, your language learning goals, and other details you want to share.

This information is not required to use the platform, but it makes a meaningful difference in how your AI conversations feel. The more context the AI has about you, the more it can tailor conversations to topics you actually care about. All of this information is stored only to personalize your experience and is never sold. You can update or delete it at any time from your account settings.

Starting Your First Conversation

Once your profile is set up, select the language you want to practice and start a conversation. The AI will begin speaking with you in your target language at a level appropriate to where you say you are. If it feels too easy or too difficult, you can adjust your level in settings.

You can type your responses or, if you prefer, use voice mode (see below). There is no script and no lesson plan. The conversation goes wherever it goes.

Using Voice Mode

To practice speaking and listening, switch to voice mode in the conversation interface. You will need to grant AcquiLingua access to your microphone when prompted. This permission can be revoked at any time in your device or browser settings.

In voice mode, your speech is processed in real time by our speech recognition provider. You will see a transcription of what you said, and the AI responds with synthesized speech in your target language. Pronunciation feedback is available to help you compare your output to a native model.

If you revoke microphone access, voice mode will be unavailable, but text-based conversation practice works fully without it.

Your Progress Dashboard

AcquiLingua tracks your learning automatically as you practice. Your dashboard shows:

Zipf Coverage Score: The percentage of everyday conversation in your target language that you can currently understand and produce, based on the vocabulary you have practiced. This is a more meaningful number than a streak or a point total.

Vocabulary progress: Words you have practiced, words flagged for review, and words that have moved into long-term retention.

Session history: How often you have practiced and for how long.

Your Spaced Repetition review queue also lives in the dashboard. These are vocabulary words scheduled for review based on how you performed with them previously. Completing your review queue regularly has a significant impact on long-term retention.

Deleting Your Account

To permanently delete your account, go to account settings and select "Delete Account," or email support@acquilingua.com with the subject line "Delete My Account." Include your account email address. Deletions are processed within 30 days.

Deleting your account removes your personal information from our systems in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Learning metrics held in anonymous, aggregated form may be retained for research purposes as described in that policy.
